Changing Territory

Just like other members of the family, your dog will have adjustments to make when relocating. But good planning can help you minimise your pet's trauma. Here are some tips for smoothing the transition:

Before

During

After

Before

  • Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and ask your veterinarian about sedating your dog during the trip. Get a copy of veterinary records.

  • Feed your dog 4-6 hours before departure.

  • Take a short walk shortly before leaving.

During

  • Carry proof of vaccination.

  • Tag your dog with moving information, including a phone number to call if the dog is found.

  • Pack some of your dog's favourite toys and treats, but feed sparingly while travelling to avoid motion sickness. Bring drinking water from your old home to avoid an upset tummy.

  • Use a pet carrier in the car, and a lead on stops.

After

  • Unpack your dog's bowls and food right away; put them in rooms that correspond to those in your old home.

  • Make an appointment with a new veterinarian for an introduction and assessment.
